While these changes bring new possibilities, they also risk leaving behind one group in particular: low-skilled adults. Addressing this challenge is at the heart of the COOPSKILLS project, and one of its most innovative responses is the creation of Reskilling Labs.
A New Approach to Adult Learning
Reskilling Labs are local, hands-on learning spaces designed to make learning more accessible, practical, and relevant for adults with low or outdated skills. Instead of traditional classroom-based training, these labs focus on experiential learning, real-life scenarios, and collaborative activities. The aim is simple but powerful: help adults build confidence, develop new skills, and reconnect learning with everyday work and life.
Many low-skilled adults face barriers to participation in education and training, including lack of time, low motivation, previous negative learning experiences, or limited access to suitable programmes. Reskilling Labs are designed to respond directly to these challenges by offering flexible, supportive, and engaging environments where learners feel encouraged rather than overwhelmed.
Responding to Europe’s Skills Challenges
Europe is currently facing significant labour shortages in key sectors, alongside growing demands for green and digital skills. At the same time, participation rates in adult learning remain uneven across countries and social groups. This gap highlights the urgent need for innovative models that do more than simply offer training – they must actively engage and mobilise learners.
Reskilling Labs respond to this need by acting as bridges between learning and work. The Role of the Reskilling Labs in COOPSKILLS
Within the COOPSKILLS project, Reskilling Labs play a central role in translating research and planning into concrete action. Following extensive fieldwork and needs analysis across partner countries, the project identified common challenges in motivating adults to reskill and upskill. These insights directly informed the design of the Reskilling Labs.
The labs will be implemented in Cyprus, Lithuania, Greece, and Spain, adapting a shared framework to local contexts. This approach reflects the project’s commitment to cooperation and learning companies – organisations that embed lifelong learning into everyday work life. Through the labs, COOPSKILLS supports companies and training providers in creating learning-friendly environments that respond to real workforce needs.
Importantly, the Reskilling Labs are not isolated interventions. They are closely linked to the project’s broader goals, including mobilization and awareness-raising, the green and digital transition, and the development of practical tools and training modules for adult education providers.
