As Europe continues to face skills shortages, demographic change, digitalisation, and the green transition, the need for flexible and locally relevant learning opportunities has never been greater. Within this context, the COOPSKILLS project is taking an important step forward through the development of its Reskilling Labs.
The Reskilling Labs are at the heart of the COOPSKILLS approach. Designed as collaborative local ecosystems, they bring together municipalities, VET providers, chambers of commerce, employers, and other stakeholders to identify emerging skills needs and create learning opportunities tailored to local realities.
During the past months, partners have been working closely with local stakeholders to establish the foundations of the four pilot Reskilling Labs that will operate in Greece, Spain, Cyprus, and Lithuania. This process has included mapping local labour market needs, identifying priority sectors, and engaging companies willing to actively participate in the initiative.
A key feature of the COOPSKILLS model is that each Reskilling Lab responds to the specific needs of its region. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, the Labs focus on sectors that are particularly relevant to their local economies and workforce challenges. As a result, each pilot country has selected a different sector according to its local context and development priorities.
This localised approach will also be reflected in the training opportunities developed through the project. Based on the needs identified by each Reskilling Lab, partners will design tailor-made learning programmes addressing the specific skills gaps of the selected sector. This means that the project will ultimately deliver four distinct training courses, each adapted to the realities, challenges, and opportunities of its respective sector and region.
The participation of local companies is already helping shape this process. By contributing their perspectives and expertise, employers ensure that the training content developed through COOPSKILLS responds to real workforce needs and supports practical skills development.
While the Reskilling Labs are still in their early stages, significant progress has already been made. The partnerships have been established, participating companies have been engaged, and the groundwork is now in place for the next phase of implementation.
Over the coming months, the project will continue working with local stakeholders to co-design training solutions, test new approaches to reskilling, and strengthen collaboration between education, business, and local communities.
Through the Reskilling Labs, COOPSKILLS aims to demonstrate that effective reskilling is not only about training programmes. It is about building sustainable local ecosystems that enable lifelong learning, support workforce transitions, and help communities prepare for the future.
